Although most Chiantis from the brilliant 2016 vintage are long gone from the market, we nabbed an allocation of the polished and complex Canonica a Cerreto Riserva from that benchmark year. Made by a rising-star winemaker and hailing from premium terroir in Castelnuovo Berardenga, it’s just starting to live up to its true potential after six years and will remain beautiful for another decade.
Dark ruby center with light ruby and crimson overtones at the rim. Leads with a dark array of aromas of red and black fruits, including black raspberry, dried cherry, blackberry, and red plum. Polished and rounded at the edges of the palate while showing finely detailed Sangiovese tannins, it’s got orange peel and red flowers adding to its complexity while tan tobacco and licorice fade into the background. A very complete Chianti Classico riserva that’s drinking in harmony. Drink now–2033.
