From the legendary winemaker known as “Mr. Sangiovese” and renowned importer Neil Empson—the man who coined the term “Super Tuscan”—the 2017 Monte Antico Supremus is the product of a master’s touch in a warm vintage. Most bottles that bear Bernabei’s fingerprints run well north of $50, but the Supremus will set you back far less than that.
Dark ruby center with garnet tones throughout. Aromas of dried red cherries and plums are surrounded by crushed blackberry, cocoa, rose petals, and dark strawberry. The fruit has an immediate impact on the palate, with dark, polished tannins that are flowing and gentle. This vintage is broad and plush in nature, with the warmth shining through the long spicy finish. Drink now–2029.
