Tony Biagi made Plumpjack Chardonnay for over a decade, and his 2020 Olema Reserve Chardonnay—which James Suckling loved for its elegance and “smooth, supple palate”—is made with expert-level attention to detail, but comes in at a price that’s less than half of what Rombauer and Newton run for.
Pale gold color. The aromas sashay out of the glass, with suggestions of Orange Julius, cream, ripe fig, and golden apple. Full-bodied, concentrated and rich on the palate, with stone fruit in the mouth and hints of verbena and baby powder. Fleshy and peachy, not falling into the trap of being too oaky or creamy! A pleasure to drink. Drink now–2024.
